Moderation

The Prophet ﷺ said:

"Do good deeds properly, sincerely and moderately. Always adopt a middle, moderate, regular course, whereby you will reach your target (of paradise)." (Sahih al-Bukhari)

So why are moderates insulted? Do the people not know they are mocking the sunnah of the prophet?

depends on your definition of moderation. what you may deem as moderate may be deemed as extreme by someone else.

I think I heard someone say that he heard Shaykh Hamza Yusuf say you know you are following the middle path when people on both sides are attacking you. Does that hold any truth?

i have heard something similar but not by shaykh hamza yusuf. i thinks its a hadith or an ayah. will have to dig out my notes...

I guess its open for interpretation, but then saying that moderation is bad is not as that bit is from sunnah.

'Moderation' is open to interpretation but IMO Moderation in accord with the Sunnah of our prophet(pbuh) would be the right way. No doubt that never can never be classed as extreme or little.
