Developers and purists erase Mecca's history

MECCA, Saudi Arabia (Reuters) - Some of Islam's historic sites in Mecca, possibly including a home of the Prophet Mohammad, are under threat from Saudi real estate developers and Wahhabi Muslims who view them as promoting idolatry.

Sami Angawi, an expert on the region's Islamic architecture, said 1,400-year-old buildings from the early Islamic period risk being demolished to make way for high rise towers for Muslims flocking to perform the annual pilgrimage to Islam's holiest city.

"We are witnessing now the last few moments of the history of Mecca," Angawi told Reuters. "Its layers of history are being bulldozed for a parking lot," he added.

Angawi estimated that over the past 50 years at least 300 historical buildings had been leveled in Mecca and Medina, another Muslim holy city containing the prophet's tomb.

Wahhabism, Saudi Arabia's dominant doctrine which promotes a strict narrow interpretation of Islam, was largely to blame, he said.

"They (Wahhabis) have not allowed preservation of old buildings, especially those related to the prophet. They fear other Muslims will come to see these buildings as blessed and this could lead to polytheism and idolatry."

In London, Geoffrey King, Islamic art and archeology specialist at the School of Oriental and African and Studies, said the fate of Islamic historic sites in Saudi Arabia was "depressing."

"The religious authorities have failed to appreciate the significance of these buildings to Muslims and scholars worldwide," said King, who taught for several years in the kingdom and stressed many young Saudis agreed with him.

Followers of Wahhabism say Muslims should focus on Mecca's Grand Mosque, which contains the Kaaba -- an ancient structure that more than 4 million Muslims visit each year as part of haj and umra pilgrimages.

Listen Kaaka, don't go up in arms about the wahabi business. Just think about it, get more education, get to know the different scholars and sects and see what they say ask questions and then make your mind up. Don't just blindly follow one and say thats it I'm sticking with him!

If you can speak Urdu then listen to professor Tahir-ul-qadri sahab, he talks from authentic hadiths....

All I'm trying to say is at your age you will get confused, with the western culture and the pakistani culture and now the wahabi and sunni and Shia, it does get too much for a child to take in.

Read books by Shiekh Al-Ghazli (RA) and other scholars who were full of wisdom, then listen to others.....Beleive me when you see a true momin you will see the noor on there face, even if it is black in colour it will still radiate....

Also bout Shaykh ul Islam's Urdu lectures..if u dnt understand urdu then there r lectures in english too.

i don't, i just prefer bilal, at home i have got about 30 transalations of the koran and i check ALL of them to make my mind up.

i get bored after five mins. i like reading the koran coz it is entertaining but reading the english transalation is tedius and can often leads to more confusion.

Inshallah I am trying to be a good muslim, All praise to allah(swt) who gave me the knoweledge and showed me the right path from my childhood, and may he keep me on this path and all the good muslims. Ameen.

Re, picking up the noor, it becomes natural, when you're heart and soul become cleaner then the wisdom increases....you can easily see just by looking who's pious and who has some discrepancies inside them....

All I'm saying is get a good education, go to college and uni - but keep a guard on the eyes, as education is the key to unlocking the brain, once the brain is unlocked then you get the sense of common sense, the brain begins to function and lights start flashing....forget about (but keep in mind) about the inner conflicts the muslims have, learn the basics of Islam i.e. eating, sleeping talking, be kind to others, nice to parents - even if they are bad to you, take care of you're bro's and sis's and basically change your thoughts. Most of all hang out with good friends as the friends can change you from the right path to the wrong path as at your age influence is a strong thing.

At your age crushes on the opposite sex will be strong, so try to be hungrier more - eat less, or better still fast if you can, control the nafs(desire) by kicking it in it's teeth, wen someone swears at you ignore them...after all it's there mouth...so what...finally be humble and take critiscm positively and reflect on it as to why someone said that to you and if you have that negative in you change it over time....nothing gets done in a day...the Biggest Jihad is fighting the Nafs and desires as it takes your whole life to win it.....

Hope that helps and pray for you brother that allah(Swt) gets the confusion, hatred, anger and deseases such as jealousy, wantoness out of your heart. Ameen.

It would only be comfortable if ppl respected the holy places in the same way...some sects just claim others are commitin shirk. so in this precise moment i hate the idea that the saudi govt. have control over the most holy places, i have seen the way they act and i am disgusted by them.

Yea it really didn't dawn on me how irritating that would be until somebody was telling me that the Catholic Church is in charge of the Ark in Ethiopia.

You can bet i'll never get a shot at going anywhere near there.

We're right they're wrong.

Catholics are out of control. They have this ridiculous hierarchy and believe that their human doctrine is as important as the bible. The Pope can speak 'for God' as is infallible when he speaks ex cathedra.

Protestants get carried away too but the basic idea of the Protestant Reform is "Sola Fide Sola Scriptorum"

Only Faith - Only Scripture.

Basically if it isn't in the bible it probably has no place in Christianity.
