Gay groups angry at Pope remarks
Gay groups and activists have reacted angrily after Pope Benedict XVI said that mankind needed to be saved from a destructive blurring of gender.
Speaking on Monday, Pope Benedict said that saving humanity from homosexual or transsexual behaviour was as important as protecting the environment.
The comments were "irresponsible and unacceptable", the UK's Lesbian and Gay Christian Movement (LGCM) said.
Vladimir Luxuria, a transgender former Italian MP, called his words "hurtful".
The row erupted as news emerged that the pontiff is to pay his first visit to the Holy Land in May next year.
'Self-destruction'
Pope Benedict made the comments in an end-of-year speech to senior Vatican staff.
Defending God's creation was not limited to saving the environment, he said, but also about protecting man from himself.
It was not "out-of-date metaphysics" to "speak of human nature as 'man' or woman'", he said. It came from the "language of creation, despising which would mean self-destruction for humans".

On the other hand there would be the issue of NOT speaking out what he sees as wrong and immoral.
Other Christians denominations are allowing gay priests etc. so its an issue for them to discuss. Now. and he has not shied away from it.
Why is the first quote IYO stupid?
"For too long, we have been a passively tolerant society, saying to our citizens 'as long as you obey the law, we will leave you alone'" - David Cameron, UK Prime Minister. 13 May 2015.
Hes obviously homophobic,,
Its a stupid thing to say now, when there are so many gay and lesbian people who are speaking out for themselves.
before you say anything i do not agree with homosexuality
never said/thought you did.
But how does that make him obviously homophobic?
Its like the leader in a mosque not speaking out when his assistant is saying that homosexuality is allowed.
The pope is in a position of authority and when there are homosexual priests being allowed to preach in churches (which may be of other denominations), it is part of his job to speak out.

That is true, hes speaking out for his religion how narrow minded of me,, but people are people. Did you watch the programme, i cant remember what tthe programme was called but where a group of non muslims were living like muslims for a week or something?
there was a gay guy on the programme and the imam or whatever he was, didnt explain the situation very well to this guy. He told the guy he was wearing feminine clothes, and the gay guy (Luke-i think he was called) said to the Imam, Id call what you were wearing a dress,
Im not explaining my point very well, but I think something like shouldnt be said in a loudspeaker because it upsets people
Yes your right, it is the job of the Priest to speak out,
But there are a gay Imams in mosques too, they just keep quiet about it,, I saw that in a documentary.
Maybe so, but when there is discussion, it is a unanimous verdict within the Muslim community that homosexuality is not allowed.

Yes, I know, I hope Im not upsetting anyone, but what exactly do gay/lesbian people do within the religion? I mean if a muslim guy or girl found out they were gay, what are the actions they are supposed to take?
I dont know of any cases where something like this has happened, so Im asking out of curiousity.
You are coming from the position of "there is such a thing as homosexuality" rather than there is such a thing ash homosexual acts.
If someone is attracted to people of the same sex, as Muslims they would need to avoid acting on it - or thinking that acting on it is allowed.

and your making sound so easy, just because wer not homsexuals doesnt mean we shouldnt try and understand the problem. WE shouldnt blow them off.
Or blow them up for that matter.

You do it then. Im glad your so understanding.
Well its either that or bend-over like everyone else for the gays.
The man stuck to his guns and said it was a sin.

yup.
There is not point trying to live life trying not to offend anyone - you will be miserable and you will also fail.
@ sbf - it may not be easy for those people, but that is their jihad in life. To not act on those desires.

Salam
Pope says Global Warming of the atmosphere, and
gays warming up to other men, are a threat to humanity.
I think his holiness is exaggerating.
There is no scientific evidence.
Omrow
*sigh*...
The man's entitled to his opinion....
People say anti-gay/homophobic things all the time that annoy me, but it doesn't end up in the newspapers...
And don't attack me with the "HE'S THE POPE, HE INFLUENCES PEOPLE"
because i'm sorry but, if people only need ONE person to SAY something and they believe it
then they're pathetic enough to be ignored.
But that's just me.

yes he is entitled to his own opinions, and he is protecting the church, so fair enough that he has say what he said. One day when your famous, Im sure what you say will be in the newspapers
mmmm,, it happens all the time, peoples reaction are either ignore or listen to whatever one man says
One day when i'm famous?
But that sounds like you think i want to be?
If i'm honest, i'd hate.... sorry HATE to be in a position where everything i say gets analysed and analysed and ANALYSED....and people base their thoughts on what I say.... why should they? And what if i'm wrong?
Not to sound rude, but it's hard enough taking responsibility for my OWN actions.... i don't see why i should take responsibilities for others' actions too....

In the catholic faith the Pope is the be all and the end all. What he says goes.
But I do not see what the problem with what he said is...
"For too long, we have been a passively tolerant society, saying to our citizens 'as long as you obey the law, we will leave you alone'" - David Cameron, UK Prime Minister. 13 May 2015.
There isnt really a problem,, I suppose i was just thinking that he probably could have said it in maybe a more polite way,, :S I dont really know,, i just think that since your representing a religion,, that maybe if you speak politely to people, they will respect your religion too,, I dont know,, waffling again.,and also I might be being biased
In line with Islamic beliefs i believe that what the pope said about homosexuality is absolutely right...its constructive.
okay, i agree its right,, from his mind, hes sticking up for whats hes saying,, I just didnt agree with the way he said "said that saving humanity from homosexual or transsexual behaviour was as important as protecting the environment."
Remember that I dont agree with homosexuality.
said that saving humanity from homosexual or transsexual behaviour was as important as protecting the environment."
Its true though...he was referring to the fact that homosexuality leads to self destruction and we are responsible for saving humanity
it's "true"?
Why is it TRUE?
Because YOU think it is?
Because it's in the Qur'an?
Something being in the Qur'an doesn't make it true.... it's your personal faith that makes you believe it's true.... if it was true ANYWAY what's the point of faith at all?

good interpretation
Just because his word is important, that doesn't make it the "be all and end all"
Being catholic doesn't make you stupid.... if the pope said " Murder's right, kill everyone" they probably wouldn't just follow his commands without a second thought....
And anyway what he said was just a declaration of HIS personal belief(s)
That's the way HE feels about Homosexuality.... he didn't say "All catholics had better believe it".... The pope is just a person.
