Nasrallah: Georgia lost because of Israel

In speech marking two-year anniversary of Second Lebanon War, Hizbullah secretary-general mocks Israeli political, military leadership:

'Gal Hirsch was defeated in Lebanon, and now lost the war for Georgia'

On Thursday Hassan Nasrallah likened the current Russia-Georgia conflict to what he called Israel's failure in the 2006 war sparked when Hezbollah captured two Israeli soldiers in a deadly cross-border attack.

"Israel sent one if its generals... to Georgia and its unfortunate government told him to train Georgian special forces," he charged. "Relying on Israeli experts and weapons, Georgia learned why the Israeli generals failed" against Hezbollah, he said.

"What happened in Georgia is a lesson to all those who take on American training for risky adventures and are then abandoned by the US," Nasrallah said of Georgia's pro-Western President Mikheil Saakashvili.

Sheikh Hassan Nasrallah, spiritual leader of the
Lebanese-based Islamic terror organization, Hezbollah,
blamed Israel for Georgia's losses against the Russian
army.

Nasrallah's televised speech, marking two years since
the Second Lebanon War between Hezbollah and Israel,
called Israel's military and political leadership
impotent.

"The entire front line of the army's brass stepped
down because of the war," Nasrallah said.

Some Israel Defense Forces (IDF) career personnel did
retire from the military as a direct result of the
government's botched handling of the war, detailed in
the Winograd Commission Report.

"Gal Hirsch, who was defeated in Lebanon, went to
Georgia and they too lost because of him," Hezbollah's
spiritual mentor said.

IDF Brigadier General Hirsch, commander of the Galilee
Division during the war with Hezbollah in the summer
of 2006, stepped down after the war and later did some
consultation work with the Georgian military.

"Relying on Israeli experts and weapons, Georgia
learned why the Israeli generals failed," Nasrallah
boasted. "What happened in Georgia is a message to all
those the Americans are seeking to entangle in
dangerous situations," he said.

The Iranian-funded and trained Hezbollah terror group
has been rebuilding its missiles cache with armaments
smuggled across the Syrian border.

Hezbollah recently gained stature after Lebanese
parliamentarians granted them status as the nation's
legitimate "resistance" group, with veto power in the
newly formed unity government.

In his speech, Nasrallah said the group's "secret"
arsenal is its strength.

"There has been an Israeli uproar about the
reinforcement of Hezbollah's strength," Nasrallah
said. "There has been talk of sophisticated arms and
an air defense system and threats if Hezbollah uses
this kind of system," he said.

"No one can expect me to stand up and say we possess
new weapons or we don't. Keeping secret is part of
strength. This is part of directing the battle of
liberation and resistance against the enemy,"
Nasrallah said.

After berating Israel's political leaders, Nasrallah
hailed the "new stage" between Syria and Lebanon --
the opening of full diplomatic relations between the
two countries -- announced in Damascus Wednesday by
Lebanese President Michel Suleiman and Syrian
President Bashar Assad.

How Israel Has Helped Georgia Train Troops And Supply
It With Weapons

Realising Russia and Georgia were on a collision
course, defense officials evaluated the situation
several months ago and made a decision to drastically
minimize sales of weapons to Georgia so as not to harm
relations with both countries, Israeli officials said
Sunday.

Israeli sales with Georgia in the past included
night-vision equipment, rifles and unmanned drones for
gathering intelligence. However defense officials said
Israel did not agree, however, to upgrade the drones
to those that possess high intelligence-gathering
capabilities. The drones were sold to Georgia by
Elbit, and the deal was closed by the former minister
Ronnie Milo, who represented the defense electronics
company in Georgia, the official said. Milo was not
available for comment on Sunday.

Officials said no tanks, planes, or missiles have ever
been supplied to Georgia by Israel, he added,
emphasizing that the majority of Georgia's weapons had
been supplied by other states. China supplies used
Kalashnikovs to the Georgian military, while Slovenia
has sold Georgia armored personnel carriers, the
official said.

Officials confirmed that former Galilee Div. commander
Brig.-Gen. Gal Hirsch had received approval from the
Defense Ministry to train elite anti-terrorist units
in the Georgian army, after the decision to minimize
arms sales to the country had been taken. Officials in
the know said that Hirsch trained a few units there,
but not very many. "We had no objection to the
Georgians acquiring anti-terrorism units - terrorism
is a worldwide problem," the source said. Israeli
officials however described reports that Israel was
heavily involved in training Georgian military forces
as grossly exaggerated, noting that 95% of Israelis in
Georgia are there for civilian projects, and only 5%
of them are there because of military affairs.

Israel had some of the most advanced laws on arms
sales in the world. "Only the US is more advanced,
because its laws permit the arrest of any arms
merchants from any country. We can only deal with
Israeli arms merchants," the source added. "Our sales
to Africa are very low. Sales to eastern Europe are
low. Most of our sales are to the US, Europe, and some
states in the far east."

Former Israeli ambassador to Georgia Shabtai Zur told
reporters on Sunday that since Georgian President
Mikheil Saakashvili took office the country has seen
advancements in various fields, specifically the
enlistment of women to the army and the recruitment of
reservists. "In my opinion these developments are due
in part to advice Georgia received from Israeli
companies that operate there," Zur said.

IDF reservists who helped to train Georgian troops
said Sunday that they had been unable to contact
soldiers who they trained up until a few months ago,
but declared that the recent hostilities came as no
surprise. Speaking to reporters, the reservists said
the bases used to train the troops had been bombed by
Russia even though they weren't located in the area
where the battles are taking place. One reservists
identified as L told Haaretz that he was hired by
Global CST, owned by Maj. Gen. Israel Ziv, and Defense
Shield, owned by Hirsch, about a year ago, right after
he left the army. He had served as a combat officer in
an elite unit, and he got the adventurous offer
through his commanding officers. "It looked
interesting. Relative to Israel, the money was
excellent, too," he said.

On Sunday, Hirsch, said all its employees, including
its subcontractors, are no longer in Georgia, noting
that the company had completed the work it had been
contracted to do, and that all its contracts with
Georgia had been approved by Israel's Defense
Ministry. Security systems services company Global
CST, managed by Ziv, said it finished its work in
Georgia at the end of July.

Ziv along with other former IDF generals and
commanders is also involved in training Colombian
security forces including those whoset Ingrid
Betancourt and 14 other hostages free in July this
year. Following her release Betancourt compared the
Colombian military operation to that of the Israeli
army.

The Hezbollah leader says Georgia's failure in Ossetia
is a lesson to those who go on blind adventures with
the US and Israeli support.

"Georgia relied on Israeli Generals as well as Israeli
weapons and faced failure", Seyyed Hassan Nasrallah

33-day war with Israel in summer 2006.

The remarks were made shortly after Georgia faced a
harsh response from Russia in its military action to

The Hezbollah leader said "what happened in Georgia is
a message to all those (governments) who rely on
America's support and encouragement to go on
adventures and wars which has not been studied".

Many believe the US military support and its
trumpeting of Tblisi's NATO membership encouraged
President Mikheil Saakashvili to launch the attack.

Analysts say Saakashvili miscalculated the Russian
response to his forces entering the breakaway region.
He waged the war but was not able to convince any NATO
countries to support him.

"What America does is just to make statements"....

see no end and at the end abandon" the embattled
nation, Nasrallah said.

Tbilisi's failure, however could be a salutary lesson
to its neighbors inclined to confront Moscow from

Plus, I don't trust Iranian press, because there is NO free press in that country. Say what you like about Western Media, but at least it is not owned and run my the government (note: I see all governments as corrupt to a greater or lesser degree, whether they are Muslims or not).
