The Prophet (saw) started preaching Islam at the age of 40

and it was the same with most other prophets too I think (the obvious exception being Prophet Isa (as)).

Don't you think that is pretty amazing?

yup. I normally consider 40 to be an age so old that it is way past the point you would consider starting something new.

At the same time, the Prophet Sallallahu Alaihi Wa Sallam (Peace and Blessings be upon him) did not simply start from scratch - he Sallallahu Alaihi Wa Sallam (Peace and Blessings be upon him) lived within the people and shows his character and example for 40 years, which the people could clearly see was unblemished.
