and it was the same with most other prophets too I think (the obvious exception being Prophet Isa (as)).

yup. I normally consider 40 to be an age so old that it is way past the point you would consider starting something new.
At the same time, the Prophet
did not simply start from scratch - he 
lived within the people and shows his character and example for 40 years, which the people could clearly see was unblemished.
