Is Santa Clause Coming to Town?

During the Christmas season, Christians all over the country illuminate their houses with lights, put up Christmas trees, and exchange gifts. TV is full of jingle bells and all the stores are decorated for Christmas. All this is very tempting to small children; children love putting up lights and decorating for holidays.

Some Muslim families also put up Christmas trees and lights to keep their kids happy. They argue that Christmas is, after all, Prophet Jesus(pbuh)' birthday and there is no harm in celebrating Christmas as long as the kids know the "true meaning of christmas"

When my nephews started talking a few years back they started asking why we do not put up lights and trees during Christmas... why do we not celebrate Christmas. I explained to them that we are Muslims and we don’t celebrate Christmas; we celebrate `Eids. And as Christmas is a christian holiday we cant celebrate it.

I realise that Christmas has become incredibly commercialised and our children are deeply affected with the festivities and glitter of this holiday.

As Christians believe Jesus Christ (pbuh) was the son of god, In celebrating it would we be committing shirk?

What is the Islamic position on these issues?

Is there any harm in celebrate Christmas?

Is it OK to put up lights during Ramadan and Eid?

Me thinks this is the most/only Islamic part of christmas, Saint Nicholas was a christian saint who was famous for giving presents to children and the poor.

Reminds me of When The Holy Prophet SAW used to hold out his arms and say to the children in the street, "the first one to touch me will recieve a present" and then give them all presents anyway.

AS far as i'm concerned the birth of Hazrath Isa AS Saint Nicholas and the Yule festival are three different things depends which ones you are celebrating, its kind of a shame St Nicholas is now trade mark of Coca Cola.

Gentleness and kindness were never a part of anything except that it made it beautiful, and harshness was never a part of anything except that it made it ugly.

The argument that “Christmas is, after all, Prophet Jesus' birthday and so there is no harm in celebrating Christmas” is neither logical nor Islamic. Why should Muslims celebrate Jesus' birthday? Why not the birthdays of the other 24 prophets and messengers who are mentioned in the Qur'an by name? For us Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) is the final Prophet and Messenger of Allah, not Jesus.

But then WHY celebrate the Holy Prophet salallahu alayhi wa sallams ''birthday''? If we dont celebrate the ''birthdays'' of the other Ambiya alayhimus salaatu was salaam then why should we celebrate the milad?

If the answer to this is in the last line, highlighted in blue, then why do people celebrate the death anniversaries of saints or the birthdays of saints aswell? I dont understand the logic of forbidding the Nabi Isa alayhis salaam's birthday and permitting that of Nabi Muhammad salallahu alayhi wa sallam and the Awliya of Islam?

Infact this is also one of the reasons we refrain from such festivals, because we say that ALLAH has made so many pious people in this ummah that if we were to celebrate their festivals then every day would be a festival, and we wouldnt have time for anything else but merriment and festivity.

Because christmas is a religious festival.

And Prophet Isa (as) was born at around spring time...

You can celerate everyday if you like. But we celebrate the blessings we have experienced. We are muslims. Our faith was revealed through the Prophet (saw). We celebrate his arrival.

We can also celebrate the Arrival of Prophet Isa (as), but it wll not be to the same degree as we do not follow prophet Isa (as) unless it goes with the quran and sunnah.

you can sit down and do dua fpr Prophet Isa (as). nowt wrong with it. AT the same time you cannot partake in an activity that is a christian religious activity. such as having an xmas tree.

Yopur argument is a red herring. Allah has given us so many blessings that if we only thank him during our whole lives, we will fail to thanks him for all his blessings. Thus you sayign we should not try?

That sound like a snobby spoilt kid. We should be thankful for what we have been given, even if our thanking can never be enough.

It is wrong to assume that because this holiday is national, it has ceased to be Christian. It is true that this holiday is very popular and it is extremely commercialized; nevertheless it is basically a religious holiday. Its very name and all its symbolism is Christian through and through.

Tha is why we cannot celebrate christmas. Not because we are banned from celebrating another prophet (as)'s birth.

heh, I was not much for emotional attachment.

If I got a car (rememerb I am a loner... so I used if not when! ...) I'd just lob it in ta bin.

Its the thought that counts. No point keeping all the cards.

you broke his heart!

how cruel...

as always, I say accept the cards... (unless tis valentines... that is a diferent matter... then take the chocolates accompanying the card, and slap him accross the face!)... you don't need to hang them up.

We do not celebrate christmas. that does not mean we have to be cruel. Just take the card... bin it when the giver aint looking.

?

and I agree with I-m so happy point too

come one Med-put a lid on it..thats all u talk about in EVERY topic

I'm beg to miss ur attacks to the halwa-loving-ahle biddah wal jammah

I dont celebrate christmas but im not gona lie and say that i dont enjoy the christmas season coz i do. I like the whole atmosphere of december, the lights in the town, late night shopping, chocolates that neighbours have given, good movies on TV, national holidays, and the best of all at the end of christmas we have the Christmas Sales Lol !!!

I agree that there a certain element to the Christmas holiday that i like. But at the end of the day. most of what Christmas stands for in today environment is what is wrong with society IMO. Christmas is about spoiling one self and other around them, it letting their desires take over and that why we see how you find nearer the time to Christmas, drinking driving, affairs, violence all tend to increase.

But saying that i would never stop any young member of my family enjoying certain element of christmas like cards, gift and other minor things, i think it best to just focus on such thing as family time and stuff that are compatible with Islam.

"A true Muslim is thankful to Allah in prosperity, and resigned to His will in adversity."

[url=http//

Christmas is a loada codswallop

a scam, companies time to skank the people

i can say so much but i cant be bothered wasting my time

'tisnt the season to be jolly at all!!

why celebrate it?

i was readin yesterdays metro, and in the section where people write in, in response to a presumably christian reader in the day befores paper, some muslims wrote in sayin...'no, we enjoy christmas too, we celebrate it, were allowed, its fun, we have trees, one even had xmas dinner!!"

not bien funny, but why the heck? no1 in the history of Islam has, any school of thought, any sect, why the heck are we conforming to this scandal?

ok if i get a card or present, cant help that - take it

i dont have a problem with christians celebrating, after all....its what they believe

but i find very few who are actually christians....most are there to get drunk n party

The Lover is ever drunk with love;
He is free, he is mad,
He dances with ecstasy and delight.

Caught by our own thoughts,
We worry about every little thing,
But once we get drunk on that love,
Whatever will be, will be.

One thing I thing I can comment is this.

When I went to school I didnt believe in xmas, I thought that its just holidays and xmas doesnt affect me, I dont get taken along in all that hype, but I used to waste time watching the xmas specials on tv eg eastenders, or those films they put on every yr.

Then when I went to madrassah, THATS WHEN i found out what it means to be totally unconnected with xmas. Evryday was the same cos madrassah was going on FT, so whilst my bros were chilling at home I was going to madrassah everyday. SubhanALLAH that time I didnt even realise that xmas had come and gone cos all day was spent in the masjid.

So now im at uni, I think its inevitable to get taken along to some extent. Obviously I dont do xmas, but my hols are in xmas as are evry1 elses, my whole timetable is set to lead up to xmas so to some extent we are all taken in by it? does any1 agree? disagree?

There is nothing wrong with celebrating birthdays of any of 144,000 Prophets of God.

God is not going to be angry with anyone who is happy on the day on which His Prophet was born.

Only the wacko Wahhabis, and the silly Salafis, oppose common sense teachings of Islam.

They have their own twisted evil ideology. They are even against the celebrations of Prophet Muhammad !!

God help them !!

Omrow

Other than its a complete waste of money, is it permissible to have a xmas tree or hang u fairy lights?

Whats wrong with having xmas dinner? Its just food that you eat everyday ... it just so happens its xmas... what are you supposed to do NOT eat on xmas?

Well if u go out your way to eat somewhere fancy that day, doesnt it mean you are doin it for that day, so really u are singling that day out hence celebrating?

xmaz card you return one even if you dont celebrate it. Even though

xmas is suppose to be a religious festival for christians, over the yrs it

has become so commercialised , people spend so much money on trees,

booze etc. Nobody knows the true meaning of xmas. And there are sum

people that say Prophet Jesus P.B.U.H. was born in january. Anyway

xmas is still good coz its the only time people are jolly and nice to you Biggrin

and the xmas sales, come on cant get any better then that Biggrin
