Biography of Hazrat Abu Bakr Siddique (R.A.)

Hazrat Abu Bakr Siddique (Radi Allah Unho)

Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (radi Allahu anhu's) real name was Abdullah, and he was given the title of "As Siddique" or"Testifier to the Truth." His father, 'Uthman, was known as Abu Quhafah and his mother, Salma, was known as Ummul Khair. He was two and a half years younger than Sayyiduna Rasulullah (sallal laahu alaihi wasallam).

Abu Bakr (R.A.) the First Among Men to Enter Islam

Abu Bakr was always a very close Companion of the Holy Prophet, he knew him better than any other man. He knew how honest and upright the Prophet was. Such knowledge of the Prophet made Abu Bakr be the first man to follow the Message of Prophet Muhammad sallallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam. He was indeed the first adult male to accept Islam.

The Holy Prophet told Abu Bakr what had happened at Mount Hira', he told him that Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala has revealed to him and made him His Messenger. When Abu Bakr heard this from the prophet sallallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam, he did not stop to think, he at once became a Muslim. He submitted to Islam with such determination that once the Holy Prophet himself remarked, "I called people to Islam, everybody thought over it, at least for a while, but this was not the case with Abu Bakr, the moment I put Islam before him, he accepted it without any hesitation". He was titled As-Siddiq by the Prophet because his faith was too strong to be shaken by anything.

In fact, Abu Bakr was more than a great believer, as soon as he became a Muslim, he immediately began to preach Islam to others. Among those who accepted Abu Bakr's invitation to Islam were; Uthman, Zubair, Talha, Abdul Rahman bin Auf, Saadi bin Waqqas and others who later became the pillars of Islam.

Abu Bakr's love of the Prophet sallallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam was so great that he was willing to sacrifice his life for the sake of protecting and comforting the Prophet saw. Such love and sacrifice were demonstrated when one day the Holy Prophet was saying his prayers in the Ka'ba, while some of the chiefs of Mecca were sitting in the court yard of the Ka'ba. Seeing the Prophet praying, 'Uqbah bin Abi Mu'eet took a long piece of cloths and put it around the Prophet's neck and twisted it hard in an attempt to strangle the Prophet sallallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam to death. At that moment Abu Bakr happened to pass by from a distance, he saw 'Uqbah trying to strangle the Prophet to death. Immediately Abu Bakr ran to the help of the Prophet, he pushed 'Uqbah aside and took the cloth from around the Prophet's neck. Thereupon the enemies of Islâm came down upon Abu Bakr and beat him unnerafully, although Abu Bakr with faith like a rock did not care for his own suffering, he was glad that he was able to save the Prophet of Allah, even at the risk of his own life.

Abu Bakr with the wealth he had, also had a major role in freeing some of the Muslim slaves, who were barbarically tortured by their heartless Mushrik masters to give up the Faith and return to their masters' beliefs. The heartless monsters tried all kinds of torture: they made them lie all naked on the burning desert sand, putting big stones on their chest, as well as other kinds of torture. Here Abu Bakr's wealth came to the rescue, as he bought the poor helpless slaves from their inhuman masters and set them free, Bilal Al-Habashi, the slave of Umayya bin Khalaf, was among those who were set free by Abu Bakr. Bilal became afterwards the Mu'azzin at the Prophet's mosque.

Migration to Madinah

Islam was growing rapidly in Mecca, the enemies of Islam were getting frustrated by this rapid growth. The Chiefs of Mecca found that it is necessary for them to get rid of the Prophet sallallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam before Islam can cause a real threat to them, so they planned to kill the Prophet. Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala revealed to his Prophet the intentions of the non-believers and ordered him to migrate to Madinah. So the Prophet quickly went to Abu Bakr's house who was among the few that were left in Mecca with the majority of Muslims having already migrated to Madinah.

The Prophet informed Abu Bakr that he was commanded to migrate to Madinah that night and that he has chosen him to have the honor of joining him on his migration. Abu Bakr's heart was full of joy, "I have been looking forward to this day for months" he exclaimed.

The Meccans were so eager to find the Prophet they were searching for him like mad hounds. Once they came to the mouth of the cave, Abu Bakr grew pale with fright, he feared not for himself, but for the life of the Holy Prophet. However, the Prophet sallallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam remained calm and said to Abu Bakr "do not fear, certainly Allah is with us". Such words quickly calmed down Abu Bakr and brought back tranquility to his heart.

Participation in Battles

Abu Bakr, being the closest of Companions to the Prophet sallallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam, took part in all the battles that Prophet Muhammad had fought.

At Uhud and Hunain, some members of the Muslim army showed signs of weakness, however, Abu Bakr's faith never wavered, he always stood like a rock by the side of the Prophet.

Abu Bakr's faith and determination to raise the banner of Islam were so great that at Badr, one of his sons, who had not yet embraced Islam was fighting among the enemies, Abu Bakr was so eager to find his son in the battle that he was searching for him amongst the enemies in order to slay him.

Abu Bakr loved his faith more than anything else. At the Battle of Badr, his son, Abdur Rahman, was fighting on the side of the Kuffar. After accepting Islam, Abdur Rahman said to his father, "O Father, at Badr, you were twice under my sword, but my love for you held my hand back." To this, Abu Bakr replied, "Son, if I had you
only once under my sword, you would have been no more." He was so uncompromising in his faith.

Abu Bakr's great love of the Prophet was demonstrated when peace talks at Hudaibiya were held. During the negotiations, the spokesman of Quraish was touching the beard of the Prophet every now and then. Abu Bakr's love for the Prophet was so great that he could bear no more, he took out his sword and looked angrily at the man saying, "...if that hand touches the beard of the Prophet again, it will not be allowed to go back".

Tabuk was the last expedition of the Holy Prophet. He was keen to make it a great success, he therefore asked people to help the expedition with whatever they could. This brought the best out of Abu Bakr who beat all records as he took all his money and household articles and heaped them at the Prophet's feet.

"Have you left anything for your children?" asked the Prophet. Abu Bakr then responded with great faith "Allah and his Messenger are enough for them". Companions standing around were stunned they realized that whatever they do they could not outdo Abu Bakr in the field of service to Islam.

The Successor of the Prophet

The first Hajj under Islam was in the ninth year of Hijra. The Prophet sallallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam was too busy at Madinah to lead the Hajj, so he sent Abu Bakr as his agent, he was to lead the Hajj in place of the Prophet.

The Prophet sallallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam led the prayers himself ever since he arrived to Madinah. During his last illness, the Prophet could no longer lead the prayers, he was too weak to go to the mosque, he therefore had to choose someone to fill such high position after him. Abu Bakr was also the one who was honored to be chosen by the Prophet for such a task.

Thus in the lifetime of the Prophet, Abu Bakr came to fill the highest position under Islam (leading prayers). While one day Abu Bakr was away Omar was appointed by the Companions to lead the prayers in his absence. Realizing the change of voice, the Prophet said "This is not Abu Bakr's voice, no one but he should lead prayers, he is the fittest person for this position".

When the news of the Prophet's death came out, many Muslims were confused and stunned. Omar himself was so overcome with emotions that he drew his sword and declared "If anyone says that the Messenger of Allah is dead, I will cut off his head".

Muslims stayed in such state until Abu Bakr arrived and gave his famous address: "O People! If anyone among you worshiped Muhammad, let him know that Muhammad is dead. But those who worshiped Allah, let them know that He lives and will never die. Let all of us recall the words of the Qur'an. It says: "Muhammad is only a Messenger of Allah, there have been Messengers before him. What then, will you turn back from Islam if he dies or is killed?" Suddenly Abu Bakr's words started to sink in, and in no time confusion was gone.

Having shrugged off the shocking news of the Prophet's death, Muslims realized that they need someone to fill the position of leadership amongst them.

The two main groups amongst Muslims were Muhajirun (refugees from Mecca), and Ansar (the people of Madinah). The Ansar gathered at the Thaqifa Bani Saida their meeting place. Saad bin Abada the Ansar leader suggested that the Caliph should be from amongst them. Although many refused saying that the Muhajirun in right have a better claim to Khilafah. When the news reached Abu Bakr, he quickly went to their gathering, fearing that confusion might spread once again, and said "Both Muhajirun and Ansar have done great service to Islam. But the former were the first to accept Islam, they were always very close to the Messenger of Allah. So, O Ansar, let the Caliph be from amongst them". After a short discussion, the Ansar agreed that they should choose the Caliph from amongst the Muhajirun, being from the tribe of Quraish and being the first to accept Islam.

Abu Bakr then asked people to choose between Omar bin Al-Khattab and Abu Ubaida Ibn A-Jarrah. Hearing this, both men jumped to their feet and exclaimed "O Siddiq, how can that be? How can anyone else fill this position as long as you are among us? You are the top man amongst he Muhajirun. You were the Companion of the Prophet sallallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam in the Thawr cave. You led prayers in his place, during his last illness. Prayer is the foremost thing in Islam. With all these qualifications you are the fittest person to be the successor of the Holy Prophet. Hold out your hand that we may pledge loyalty to you".

But Abu Bakr did not stretch out his hand. Omar saw that the delay might lead to the reopening of the disagreements so he himself took Abu Bakr's hand out and pledged loyalty to him. Others followed by example, and Abu Bakr became the first Caliph by general consent of the Muslims.

After his election as the Caliph, Abu Bakr addressed the Muslims with these words:

"O People! I have been chosen by you as your leader, although I am no better than any of you. If I do any wrong, set me right. Listen, truth is honesty and untruth is dishonesty. The weak among you are the powerful in my eyes, as long as I do not give them their dues. The powerful among you are weak in my eyes, as long as I do not take away from them what is due to others.

"Listen carefully, if people give up striving for the Cause of Almighty Allah, He will send down disgrace upon them. If people become evil-doers, Almighty Allah will send down calamities upon them.

"Obey me as long as I obey Allah and His Rasul (sallal laahu alaihi wasallam). If I disobey Allah and His Rasul (sallallaahu alaihi wasallam), you are free to disobey me."

Ali radiallaahu 'anhu along with some of his relatives delayed their pledge of loyalty to Abu Bakr for six months after a difference of opinion with the Caliph due to the right of inheritance of the Prophet's land. Although both men respected each other, and Ali soon after the death of his wife Fatimah gave the pledge of loyalty to Abu Bakr.

Such was the quality of the humble and generous Companion who believed the Prophet in everything to the extent that he was called As-Siddiq, by the Prophet. His great personality and service to Islam and Muslims earned him the love and respect of all Muslims, so that he was chosen as the first Caliph after the death of the Prophet by all Muslims.

You forgot to add other parts which molvis hide from you and dont tell you in the masjid.
He disobeyed the Prophet (pbuh) and did not join Osama's army when he was ordered to so.
He also deserted the Prophet (pbuh) on the battlefield and ran for his life leaving the Prophet. If you read the embarassing details of battle of Uhad, you will confirm what i just told you. Most books hide facts that are bitter and molvis never repeat them. you can go ask your moulana yourself. or read Shibli Numani's book on Sirah life of the Prophet. He is a top sunni scholar who told it like it was. There are load of facts which i dont want to mention here coz its too embarassing for you. do your own research, dont reply on others to give you full information.

Osama was one of early followers of Prophet (pbuh). He was appointed commander of an army and told to go fight the Romans. But Abu Bakr refused accept this appointment and hence refused to go with the army. This made others also disobey the Prophet (pbuh).
If you read history books, this event occured only a few days before Prophet's death.

That is the reason why Shia Muslims dont respect Abu Bakr because Prophet himself did not like him for what he had just done. Prophet was upset.
We Shias love the Prophet (pbuh) and we dont like anyone whom the Prophet didnt like.
We have nothing personal against Abu Bakr. Most of his life he was a good man.

Shocking statements there.
No wonder Shia are accused of Kufr!
You openly insult and disrespect the best man ever after the Prophet Sallallahu Alaihi Wa Sallam (Peace and Blessings be upon him)
You should read the ahadith of where the Prophet Sallallahu Alaihi Wa Sallam (Peace and Blessings be upon him) praises and highlights the status of Hazrat Abu Bakr Siddique (RA).
If you insult or disrespect the sahabah then it is an act of Kufr- i dont think there is any ikhtilaaf on this issue amongst the main four sunni school of thoughts.
I will post up the ahadith i mentioned shortly

malik this is for you:

Abu Bakr al-Siddiq, `Atiq ibn Abi Quhafa, Shaykh al-Islam, `Abd Allah ibn `Uthman ibn `Amir al-Qurashi al-Taymi (d. 13), the Prophet’s intimate friend after Allah, exclusive companion at the Prophet’s Basin (hawd) and in the Cave, greatest supporter, closest confidant, first spiritual inheritor, first of the men who believed in him and the only one who did so unhesitatingly, first of his four Rightly-Guided successors, first of the ten promised Paradise, and first of the Prophet’s Community to enter Paradise.

Alone among the Companions, Abu Bakr repeatedly led the Community in prayer in the lifetime of the Prophet. The latter used to call him by his patronyms of Abu Bakr and Ibn Abi Quhafa, and he named him with the attributes "The Most Truthful" (al-Siddîq) and "Allah’s Freedman From the Fire" (`Atîq Allâh min al-nâr). When the Quraysh confronted the Prophet after the Night Journey, they turned to Abu Bakr and said: "Do you believe what he said, that he went last night to the Hallowed House and came back before morning?" He replied: "If he said it, then I believe him, yes, and I do believe him regarding what is farther than that. I believe the news of heaven he brings, whether in the space of a morning or in that of an evening journey." Because of this Abu Bakr was named al-Siddîq: the Very Truthful, the One Who Never Lies.

Among the Companions who narrated from him: Anas, `A’isha, Jabir, Abu Hurayra, the four `Abd Allahs (Ibn `Abbas, Ibn Mas`ud, Ibn `Umar, Ibn `Amr), `Abd Allah ibn al-Zubayr, `Umar, `Uthman, and `Ali. The latter is one of the narrators of the Prophet’s hadith cited by Abu Bakr: "We [Prophets] do not leave anything as inheritance. What we leave behind is charity (sadaqa)."

`Umar said: "Abu Bakr’s faith outweighs the faith of the entire Umma." This is confirmed by the following hadith: The Prophet asked: "Did any of you see anything in his dream?" A man said to the Prophet: "O Messenger of Allah, I saw in my dream as if a balance came down from the heaven in which you were weighed against Abu Bakr and outweighed him, then Abu Bakr was weighed against `Umar and outweighed him, then `Umar was weighed against `Uthman and outweighed him, then the balance was raised up." This displeased the Prophet who said: "Successorship of prophethood (khilâfa nubuwwa)! Then Allah shall give kingship to whomever He will." `Umar also said: "The best of this Community after its Prophet is Abu Bakr." `Ali named him and `Umar the Shaykh al-Islam of the Community and said: "The best of this Community after its Prophet are Abu Bakr and `Umar," "The most courageous of people is Abu Bakr," and "The greatest in reward among people for the volumes of the Qur’an is Abu Bakr, for he was the first of those who gathered the Qur’an between two covers." He was also the first to name it mushaf.

Abu Bakr’s high rank is indicated, among other signs, by the fact that to deny his Companionship to the Prophet entails disbelief (kufr), unlike the denial of the Companionship of `Umar, `Uthman, and `Ali to the Prophet. This is due to the mention of this companionship in the verse: "The second of two when the two were in the cave, and he said unto his companion: Grieve not" (9:40) which refers, by Consensus, to the Prophet and Abu Bakr. Allah further praised him above the rest by saying: "Those who spent and fought before the victory are not upon a level (with the rest of you)." (57:10)

The Prophet confirmed his high rank in many of his sayings, among them:

"Allah gave one of His servants a choice between this world and what He has with Him, and that servant chose what Allah has with Him." Abu Bakr wept profusely and we wondered why he wept, since the Prophet had told of a servant that was given a choice. The Prophet himself was that servant, as Abu Bakr later told us. The Prophet continued: "Among those most dedicated to me in his companionship and property is Abu Bakr. If I were to take an intimate friend other than my Lord, I would take Abu Bakr. But what binds us is the brotherhood of Islam and its love. Let no door [of the Prophet’s mosque] remain open except Abu Bakr’s."

"I am excused, before each of my friends, of any intimate friendship with anyone. But if I were to take an intimate friend, I would take Ibn Abi Quhafa as my intimate friend. Verily, your Companion is the intimate friend of Allah!"

"You [Abu Bakr] are my companion at the Basin and my companion in the Cave."

"Call Abu Bakr and his son so that I will put something down in writing, for I fear lest someone ambitious forward a claim, and Allah and the believers refuse anyone other than Abu Bakr."

`Amr ibn al-`As asked: "O Messenger of Allah, who is the most beloved of all men to you?" He replied: "Abu Bakr."

"It is impermissible for a people among whom is Abu Bakr, to be led by other than him."

"Take for your leaders those who come after me: Abu Bakr and `Umar."

"O`Ali! Abu Bakr and `Umar are the leaders of the mature inhabitants of Paradise and its youth among the first and the last, except for Prophets and Messengers."

"The sun never rose nor set over anyone better than Abu Bakr."

"The Prophet used to hold nightly conversations with Abu Bakr in the latter’s house, discussing the affairs of Muslims, and I [`Umar] was present with them."

`Umar was angered by Abu Bakr one day and left him in anger. Abu Bakr followed after him, asking his forgiveness, but `Umar refused and shut his door in his face. Abu Bakr then went to the Prophet and took hold of his garment until his knee showed. The Prophet said: "Your companion has been arguing!" Abu Bakr greeted him and said: "There was a dispute between me and `Umar, then I felt remorse and asked him to forgive me but he would not, so I came to you." The Prophet said, repeating three times: "Allah forgives you, O Abu Bakr! Allah forgives you, O Abu Bakr! Allah forgives you, O Abu Bakr!" Then `Umar felt remorse and went asking for Abu Bakr at his house without finding him. He came to the Prophet and greeted him, but the Prophet’s face changed with displeasure. Seeing this, Abu Bakr sat up on his knees in fear before the Prophet, saying twice: "O Messenger of Allah! I am the one who trangressed. O Messenger of Allah! I am the one who transgressed." The Prophet said to the people: "Allah sent me to you and you all said: ‘You are lying!’ But Abu Bakr said: ‘He said the truth.’ Abu Bakr gave me solace with his person and property. Will you leave my companion alone once and for all? Will you leave my companion alone once and for all?!" After this Abu Bakr was never harmed again.

"Jibril came to me, took me by the hand, and showed me the gate through which my Community shall enter Paradise." Abu Bakr said: "Would that I were with you to see it!" The Prophet said: "Did you not know? You will be the first of all my Community to enter it."

Al-Suyuti relates through Ibn Sa`d’s report from `A’isha her description of Abu Bakr: "He was a man with fair skin, thin, emaciated, with a sparse beard, a slightly hunched frame, sunken eyes and protruding forehead, and the bases of his fingers were hairless." He was the foremost genealogist of the Quraysh and the best of them at interpreting dreams after the Prophet according to Ibn Sirin. `A’isha related that both he and `Uthman had relinquished drinking wine even in the Time of Ignorance. His caliphate lasted two years and three months in which he opened up the lands of Syria and Iraq for the Muslims, suppressed apostasy among the Arab tribes, fought the pseudo-Prophets al-Aswad al-`Ansi, Tulayha al-Asadi who recanted and declared his prophethood in Najd, and Musaylima the Liar who was killed in the devastating battle of al-Yamama.

Imam al-Nawawi pointed out that Abu Bakr’s genealogical tree alone regroups four successive generations of Companions of the Prophet: his father Abu Quhafa, himself, his daughter Asma’, and her son `Abd Allah, in addition to Abu Bakr’s son `Abd al-Rahman and his grandson Abu `Atiq. Nawawi states that only one hundred and forty-two hadiths of the Prophet are narrated from Abu Bakr. He comments: "The reason for this scarcity, despite the seniority of his companionship to the Prophet, is that his death pre-dated the dissemination of hadiths and the endeavor of the Followers to hear, gather, and preserve them." Among Abu Bakr’s sayings: "Whoever fights his ego for Allah’s sake, Allah will protect Him against what He hates."

@ Malik - which war do you refer to?

Secondly, if there was any further truth to your words, why did the Prophet Sallallahu Alaihi Wa Sallam (Peace and Blessings be upon him) let Hadhrat Abu Bakr (ra) lead prayer during his last days? Surely if there was a problem, he would have prevented it.

are you denying what i said was true about Sahabas refusing to obey the Prophet's order when told them to go with Osama?

its all in sunni books.

you said Prophet (pbuh) asked Abu Bakr to lead prayers during the last days.
is that right?

Ayatollah rightly named America as "Great Satan".

I said I was asking for the source. Link. I want to see which incident is in "all the sunni books" (because I do know that some alleged books are not written by the authors that it is suggested so).

and no, people would not follow Hadhrat Abu Bakr and go against the Prophet Sallallahu Alaihi Wa Sallam (Peace and Blessings be upon him) - besaides the two would be in agreement.

as for the last days, we all know that the Prophet Sallallahu Alaihi Wa Sallam (Peace and Blessings be upon him) observed the salaah with Hadhrat Abu Bakr (ra) leading. If there was a problem there, the prophet Sallallahu Alaihi Wa Sallam (Peace and Blessings be upon him) would have acted.

yes it is right, andali RA gave his bayah to abu bakr RA aswell, and to umar RA and uthman RA, all whom he loved and respected dearly.

He did more than that. he named his kids after them.

AFAIK, he names TWO Abu Bakr, TWO Umar, and one Uthmaan.

How much more could Hadhrat Ali (ra) say that he (ra) approved of his predecessors than naming his kids after them?

Prophet gave order to Abu Bakr to go with Osama's army but he disobeyed the order.

Prophet never prayed behind anyone; you just invented that thing, in the same was hadith inventors fabricated hadith

The real history is that Prophet did not appoint Abu Bakr to lead the prayer, which is why when he discovered that Abu Bakr was leading the prayer, he went in his illness and removed him. Why would Prophet do that if he had told Abu Bakr to lead the prayer.

Quote:
We know how Aisha, who hated Ali, sent for her father Abu Bakr, supposedly on behalf of her husband, ordering him to lead the people in prayer, after she learnt that the Prophet had summoned Ali for this duty.

Use your head when reading the accounts of history.
We dont hate Abu Bakr. We just dont like anyone whom the Prophet didnt like. we have nothing personal against Abu Bakr.
Hadith were invented when he was caliph to twist history and make him look good. But Allah makes sures the truth survives for those who seek it.

Yes stories have been invented, lies spread but I think they are the other way around from what you state.

More we know that Hadhrat Ali (ra) named TWO sons Abu Bakr. If there was animosity, that would not have been the case.

I feel happy reading this article about Siddiq-e-Akbar Yar-e-Gar Hazrat Abu Bakr Siddique (R.A), i agree with the high status of Syedna Siddiq-e-Akbar (r.a) i believe that all Ashab-e-Mustafa (p.b.u.h) are of high status we should not said any thing unpleasant about them as we are directed by Sarkar (p.b.u.h) to love his followers, the people who are looking at the weaknessess of these high calibre ashab (r.a) would not get anything because it will spread hate in their hearts so if heart is not clean sirat-e-mustaqeem is far, and if we really want to love Sarkar (pbuh) then we have to love all his followers. And Hazar Abu Bakr (ra) was first among them.

So we should always feel positive attributes about these Ashab(r.a) because they have seen & lived with Sarkar (pbuh) and their status & spirits are beyond mine & anyonez imagination.

Good work Ak 47...

May Allah qabool us what we try to do in his way. Ameen
