Swiss Muslims open mosque doors

Muslims in many parts of Switzerland have invited the public into mosques - three weeks before a vote on whether to ban the construction of minarets.

Muslim organisations say they hope their open day will counter what they say are fears and prejudices.

The conservative group that initiated the vote - the largest party in the Swiss parliament - says minarets are a symbol of Muslim political power.

Opinion polls suggest the proposed ban will be rejected by voters.

I doubt it... the churches also seem to have a thing with blocking out light, while Muslim architecture seems to try to do the opposite. But it could just be geographical - it can be cold in the uk, while it can be warm in the middle east, so the architecture of here will be to keep heat in, while the architecture of there will want to get rid of it as quickly as possible.

is gothic not always associated with darkness? that is where I see the line - the muslim architecture generally lets in the light, so not gothic.

Unless my understanding of "gothic" is wrong.

Just wikipedia-ing, I came across and .

I have not read either article, but I saw the top pictuer on each page, and to me muslim architectures seem to fit more into the latter category.

If on the other hand you mean it being.. erm... imposing... well, big buildings can be.
