Many dead in Indonesian quake

Dozens dead in Indonesian quake

At least 75 people are dead and thousands are trapped under rubble after a strong earthquake shook the island of Sumatra, officials say.

The epicentre of the 7.6-magnitude quake was about 50km (30 miles) off the coast of the Indonesian island, near the city of Padang.

There are reports of widespread destruction to buildings and bridges.

It comes hours after a tsunami triggered by a separate South Pacific quake killed more than 100 people.

A tsunami watch issued by the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center in the wake of the Indonesian quake has been lifted.

New quake hits stricken Sumatra

An earthquake with a magnitude of 7 has hit Sumatra, a day after another powerful quake devastated much of the Indonesian island.

Officials now say at least 200 bodies have been found from the earlier 7.6 magnitude quake, which triggered landslides and cut power lines.

Hundreds of buildings, including hospitals, collapsed in Padang, the capital of West Sumatra province.

Rescue workers said the number of dead is expected to rise.

Thousands of people are thought to be buried under rubble.

yes it is. The richter scale is logarithmic meaning a 7 is ten times stronger than a 6 which is ten times stronger than a 5 which is ten times stronger than a 4.

The earthquake that hit Pakistan/Kashmir in 2005 was (a minimum of 7.6) and it caused much devastation.

EDIT - it is not a magnitude of ten between numbers, but a magnitude of a thousand. so a 7 is a thousand times worse than a 6. The - it seems to have been succeeded by the in recent times as a more accurate measurement.

Over here they may have been lucky by the epicentre probably being in the sea (but that can cause tsunamis, so it has large risks too).

and 9 (or is it 9.something?) is the largest yet.

Normaly an earthquake which is 7 on the richter scale, does a lot of damage, causes deaths etc errm yeah as you've seen happen in those places (i jsut wanted to show off, what i remember from my geography lessons 2 years ago lol Smile )

Nothing. Unless you can help, but if you can't, just being aware may be enough (to make you feel bad - international news can have that impact...) and depending on the scale of the damage, there could be many charity appeals for donations etc.

Indonesia quake deaths pass 1,000

At least 1,100 people have died in the earthquake that struck the Indonesian island of Sumatra on Wednesday, the UN humanitarian chief has said.

John Holmes said many hundreds more had been injured, and both figures were set to rise further.

Rescuers are working into the night to find survivors in the rubble of hundreds of collapsed buildings.

The 7.6-magnitude quake struck close to the city of Padang, the capital of West Sumatra province.

The earthquake brought down hospitals, schools and shopping malls, cut power lines and triggered landslides.
