The dangers of dieting.

Uncomfortable in his own skin

Paul Thorn lost nearly 16st 13lb (107.5kg) as a result of gastric bypass surgery. He now weighs 11st 5lb (69.8kg), a weight which he says he always dreamed of being.

But he told BBC Radio 5 Live's Victoria Derbyshire programme that he was not prepared for the amount of excess skin which would be left on his legs and stomach. He said he felt better about himself when he was obese.

Thats not dieting.

Gastric band IMO is the lazy way out...I know of a few Arabs who have had this procedure done...apparently its a standard, routine procedure in the Arab world.

I cant even imagine how one can lack in self control so much that they would rather have their stomach cut/tied then refuse a second helping of cake..

One should Breaking of the Two Desire by Imam Ghazzali...he says such interesting things about gluttony..

On the other hand being constantly hungry probably also has its fair share of side effects and debilitations.

But taking it slowly would probably have been much better.

Not too big a fan of tassawuf and self control/self delusion [For it can be that as the trick is to utterly and totally convince yourself that you don't really want something you really do] - tried it, I think I got pretty far and then realise that it has a pretty large cost associated to it. Everything in moderation (especially moderation?) is probably best if that balance can be achieved.

On the other hand:

Proof mounts on restricted diet

Cutting calories may delay the ageing process and reduce the risk of disease, a long-term study of monkeys suggests.

The benefits of calorie restriction are well documented in animals, but now the results have been replicated in a close relative of man over a lengthy period.

Over 20 years, monkeys whose diets were not restricted were nearly three times more likely to have died than those whose calories were counted.

Writing in Science, the US researchers hailed the "major effect" of the diet...

that video, people do NOT watch it. its errm not very nice.

Why not? its a possible outcome of heavy dieting - think of it as wrinkles.

deflated balloon? balloons generally deflate gracefully.

And for that guy, even after a gastric band, he will probably need surgery to get rid of the excess skin.

Moderation in everything is good - even in weight loss.

I saw an advert for this in the paper and was... pretty surprised. I did not think such things would be advertised (even though it makes total sense from a marketing/sales point of view) as it seems... crass.

I find lack of energy to be the worse side-effect of dieting.

Why not? Islamically things work the other way - they are allowed unless they are banned.

Are you basing this on any texts, or idly waffling? No harm in either, but serious thought shouldn't really be on the latter.

Lucky for them they did not encounter me. First law of fiqh: everything is allowed unless forbidden.

While there is also the guideline of preventing paths that lead to haraam, the early scholars also warned of extremism in this too - one example was of grapes and wine. Grapes are needed to make wine, yes eating grapes is sunnah.

Any "scholar" that counters the logic of everything being allowed unless forbidden automatically loses points in my eyes.
