Talking almost specifically about niqabs.
On another forum, some people are arguing that muslim women are being oppressed and the proof of that is the black niqabs they wear in the sweltering the temperatures of the middle east while the men wear white.
I found that a ludicrous argument and said so, but the counter was why is it so universal then, with it being almost a unanimous colour worn by the women for the jilbab.
So... is it personal choice or a religious one to wear black?
and if personal, why is it so popular?
intresting question

but doesn't black stick out like a sore thumb? :s
and is black worn everywhere or just arab countries?
(another question - before a few decades ago and the chemical revolution, was it even possible to create jet black fabrics? most colours were only able to be made after the 1920's...)

well
depends where u go
if ur in singapore or indonesia, for example,
there they wear floral prints
if u wore a black niqab, you'd stand out
no idea. Why are they shorter?

Why do Scottish people tend to be shorter than English? It's not a desert north of Hadrian's Wall.
Don't just do something! Stand there.
Did you just say Scottish people are fat?!?!

Assalamu alaikum,
Is it personal choice to wear black or religious?, a bit of both.
In saudi for example i think the law of the land imposes the colour black. Although i don't think they will fine you for wearing other colours i reckon you will be frowned upon. So if you're prepared for that and more male attention than you desire then you can wear it. It may be cultural as well i'm not so sure.
I know i've seen travel programmes such as micheal palin series where the arab men are shown to be wearing black imamahs wrapped round to cover their entire face. Some even wear black thobes. They say it is tradition, and although the black absorbs heat from the sun, it also absorbs heat from our body. Scientific fact apparently. I don;t know how true that is, because to be honest it is like an inferno just sitting in my husbands car for 2 mins wearing my black garb, i certainly don't feel anything being absorbed except all the water from my body.
In Iraq for example it's the same black-a jilbab that starts from the head and goes down to the feet, no headscarf required. Same sort of dress in some parts of Iran.
I know black can be used with a religious context in mind. I've read i don't know how many books, and articles where black and basically earth tone colours are recommended for hijab dress as they are not ostentatious, and don't invite attention from the male species so much. Black is thght to be the most far removed from being a choice colour of "adornment". This is true if you think how many times ppl in west wear black head to toe..usually funerals, and may be halloween. I can see why i scare some children without intending to!
Another reason black is preferred to is because there is a hadith where women with full hijab dress including the face covering are referred to as black crows, i don't remember it word for word, but i know black crows or black bird is used to describe them. I know many following the Salafi view often bring forth this as evidence for wearing black, and i suspect this may be a reason it is enforced in saudi, amongst many other reasons.
But there are countless hadith where all sorts of coloured hijabs are mentioned. As far as i;m aware there is no restriction on colour, but scholars do tell us to use a commonsense approach. Earth tones and dark colours are preferred, to bright and bold designs.
As far as jilbab goes many sisters prefer black teamed with different coloured scarves because it makes for a good contrast, maybe that's why the black jilbab is so universally popular, but i could be wrong.
Also a lot of women are obssesed with their weight whether they're muslim or not, even though they are slim they think they're fat, so black is the obvious colour to hide their insecurities. The sisters are gonna attack me for this one lol
I wear black or blue for several reasons. Main reason is i find scarves wrapped round with pins too restrictive. Even in winter I'd be sweating and i'd never wear a coat.
I also suffer from migraines i find wearing a underscarf plus a headscarf on top all day was making things worse for me. I found relief by ditching these for a khimar. You know them long headress' somali women wear, they can come up to the knee or longer, and are worn with a jilbab or matching skirt. No underscarf needed, no pins to fuss around with. I think they're elegant. They come in many colours but i'm not brave enough to wear a bright colour from head to toe. I've had one hanging in my wardrobe for about a year now,but haven't had the guts to wear it...pathetic i know, so now i don't purchase them.
Niqab should always be black especially if you intend to eat outside wearing it, if you get any sauce on it, it won't be noticed. If you have kids black is best for their grimy little hands. I've worn light coloured scarves wrapped in a niqab fashion and in winter when it's cold i can see condensation around mouth and nose area. If anyone saw it they would think it's snot, course it's not because it disappears as quickly as it appeared. Too much info about my sad life lol, i better hit the sack!
P.s i thght Arab women were tall, all those i've seen so far are, except for Somali sisters. They are either very tall, or very petite. my sisters are gorgeous either way!
I think English women are short compared to scottish women, not to cause a argument or anything aherm. It was just so in my face when i was there countless scottish lasses at least 5'8'' and more minus heels. ?i wonder if a study has been done....?
Q if Arab women are short why are the jilbab imports sooo long? Even those that say small are massive for me, and there's the shop keeper trying to flog it to me.
Wasalam
