"The needs of the many, outweigh the needs of the few."
How many of you would agree with that logic?
In theory it seems to make sense, but in practice.
Does it seem worth it? Kill 1 person to save billions? Can we really do that? Starve 1 person to feed 5. Logically that makes sense, the survival of the others depends on one of them to die.
Lets make it even simpler. Could you sacrifice yourself to save others... or even your own happiness for the sake of others? Should we even have to?
Let’s look at this statement with more analysis, if there is enough food to feed five people at the expensive of starving one, then if we use basic mathematics then if we smaller the ratio to the other five, we can then feed the one remaining person.
My father use to tell me about sacrifices, “Rashid it’s not what you take up but what you give up)
“Take Aqeedah from the Salaf, learn Adab from the Tableeghi Jamaat, and brotherhood from the Ikhwaan"
Modern society today places the self first. There has been a steady decrease in decorum, manners and respect over the years. Historically, placing yourself first was seriously seen as bad taste and unheard of. Im sure this wouldnt have been a question some 30+ years ago. Read old fairy tales or novels such as those by Dickens or Bronte and you'll see what I mean.
It sactificing yourself to save 5 others a choice that you would make, or one that was already made for you by the other 5 around you?
May Allah shine sweet faith upon you this day and times beyond. May your heart be enriched with peace, and may your home be blessed always. Ameen.
I would probably choose myself over the other 5. They can fend for themselves...
...Saying that, the hypothetical question is not a fair one as if I had the provisions (as is implied), I would NOT be starving myself and also allowing others nourishment. Its not an either/or.
Well, one person may starve (if the provisions are only enough for 5 and there is absolute certainty), but why should that be me? If I bring the provisions I have first right to use them.
"For too long, we have been a passively tolerant society, saying to our citizens 'as long as you obey the law, we will leave you alone'" - David Cameron, UK Prime Minister. 13 May 2015.
The reason why they don't equate well to tghe real world is that they were fairy tales.
We simply cannot know if people are more selfish now or before.
Placing yourself first is not necessarily a bad thing.
People generally would like to be and probably have aspired to be better than humans. The problem with that is that we are humans - and that is not even a bad thing!
