The government has been accused of wasting hundreds of thousands of pounds of African aid.

The BBC's Five Live Report said it found more than £700,000 spent on hotel bills and meals in Malawi for US staff.

The National Audit Office said it may mount an investigation into the use of consultants by the Department of International Development (DFID).

The DFID has yet to issue a response to the accusations, which will be aired in a programme on Sunday.

'Phantom aid'

One project in Malawi funded by the DFID has been accused of using international flights to fly in pens and notebooks bought in Washington DC.

The BBC report looked at several projects funded by the department in Malawi, which is considered to be the tenth-poorest country in the world.

Well the tables have trned a bit. Normally we accuse the recipient governments of wasting the money.

I wonder how much of our godwill is squandered by either the government, or other agencies.

PS This is not a note to stop donating. If you can afford it you should.

I think that was one of the big things Bono was worried about, he kept talking about how it never reaches the ground level due to interference and micromanaging from government officials on both continents.

But £700,000 on wining and dining?

That is alot of money.

There is a payoff angle there aswell, with the corruption costs hidden under other things such as this.

That is truly atrocious. The corruption is probably med companies still trying to hold copyrights over generic companies - which is sick - in Africa.

Isn't that what the new movie "constant gardener" is all about?
