but Paladin....neither me or the rest of my family eat chapattis much, we tend to have rice a lot.
Me and my siblings tend to have one traditional asian dish with rice once a day, and one western type meal home made, once a day. So i duno where the problem lies. And we don't use ghee or butter, unless it's an Eid meal.
Obviously with my elders they tend to stick to their traditional curries and rice for every meal, cept breakfast. Now that can't be good for you coz they don't balance it with leafy salads or a bowl of veg. One thing i've noticed 90% if not all asian households will never have a salad bowl in sight. When my dad first saw me eating salad with rice, he laughed. He said you've turned into a white girl, all you eat is salad, and steamed veg. I said
Few weeks later he's always asking me to make him some  Our lot need to be educated on a balanced diet. Fruit is also lacking. Although there's always lots in the house no one bothers to eat it unless someone prepares it for them
I think i have a pretty good diet, but that doesn't mean i'm safe from diabetes or other illnesses, there's only so much you can do to protect yourself, nothing is fullproof.

Well that was an interesting night. Shortly after posting that at 5am everything took a fast downhill turn - couldn't breathe hallucinations, so my roommate called security and they called 911.
Get this - apparently you can be allergic to medicine
I thought it was food poisoning but apparently I was having a rather violent reaction to a decongestant the infirmery gave me yesterday.
I got a shot stayed at the Hospital for an hour or two and BAM i'm back in business.
Never really had that much experience with allergies - but i'm definitely not interested in having one again, these things hit ya like a freight train and disappear just as fast.
Weird...

yeah a lot of ppl are allergic to penicilin and other drugs, that's why docs always ask you if you're alergic to it before they inject you. I'm like erm how do i know if i'm allergic to it, never had it before, we'll have to wait and see, then i can hold you liable
This gives you an insight to how those people with allergies live their lives...

yeah rice.
i think i'm part of a different generation though. i like rice and curry once a day, but for supper i prefer a non indopak dish. It can be hassle preparing it coz with asian food curry can be made to last for supper or even the next day. But english meals, italian, east african, etc etc are best eaten on the day. left overs just don't taste the same the next day.
Anyone had somalian food before, i;ve had it a few times love it.
but Paladin....neither me or the rest of my family eat chapattis much, we tend to have rice a lot..
Thanks for pointing that out, I didn't make it clear in my earlier post but the principles for flour also apply to rice...
Basically, people of the word get their carbohydrates from three main sources:
Wheat, rice or potatoes – for these are the richest sources of carbohydrates where
Flour contains more carbohydrate than Rice,
which contains more than potatoe,
which contain more than most other vegetables.
Again with rice, brown rice is better than white rice.
So although rice isn’t as carbohydrate rich as flour, overeating any carbohydrate, coupled with an inactive lifestyle will make an individual susceptible to diabetes...
However, let us remember that carbohydrates are the best source of energy that we can get.
That is why the various cultures of the world centre their diets around one of three great sources of carbohydrates.
Paradoxically that which was the best source of energy and carbohydrate i.e. bread (in biblical times it was sometimes the only food served at mealtimes), rice and potatoes are now the worst of foods for the inactive lifestyle; which the modern world creates.
Our lifestyles have become more sedate and so our diets must also be changed...
However your attitude to your diet, yashmaki, is excellent; steamed vegetables give you all the nutrients and carbohydrates that you need with hardly any of the risk. You hit the nail on the head when you said 'balanced diet'. This is what people should aspire to, rather than 'This is the food we’ve always eaten and so we’re gonna carry on eating it and more so' – we can see where this attitude is taking others to…
Don't let others put you off when you know you are doing the right thing!
You have a wise head and a caring heart...and may all tasks be made easy for you and for all righteous people.
May peace be blessed upon you.

There is something I do not understand about allergies... especially nut allergies...
If they were natural, would not everyone who had the allergy been dead, not allowing the allergy to be carried forward?
I do not think in the past people would have been so careful having sealed food processing rooms just to avoid contamination by nuts...
so how do they arise?

I am gonna go for 'Lassi' curry.
Just need to get ingredients.
Not much has really changed in life. i used to do most things myself anyway. The only change is cooking.
For the last two days I cheated. Yesterday I got someone else to cook, as I got back from work at around 10ish. The day before it was takeout day.
I will keep everyone informed of this experiment.
One thing though. Its bliss not being nagged all the time!

Well I just got off the phone getting the recipe, and how to make it.
Lets just say my confidence has taken a downturn.
I got a rough guide, but the proportions can easily be messed up.
Steps:
1. Make Tarqa (throw some garlic in some oil, and brown).
2. Add basaar, salt and chilli. How much of each? it'll have to be pot luck. Good thing I have a very high tilerance of chilli...
3. Make lassi separately, add some flour, and add to mix.
4. Start again as it'll all go horribly wrong.
A successful run should take about 20-30 mins I think...
Lets hope its ready by 10 as it should be. I am gonna watch House. (Dunno why I like it. I normally can't similar telly. Its all wrong. But I like it...)
(and LilSis I gave plenty of warning that I was gonna cut down the time I sopend on here...)
[EDIT]

Yeh I have to clean the kitchen when my mum is not home in the evening and has to go to some sewing class, she makes the dinner before she goes but then I have to wash the dishes and clean the kitchen (I just did a min ago) .
