The bill would see the introduction of a moral police force to ensure strict adherence to Islamic injunctions.
Calling the proposed law "Taleban-style extremism", angry opposition politicians threw copies of the proposed legislation in the air to register their protest.

The proposed law calls for the establishment of a new department to "discourage vice and encourage virtue." [/b]The BBC's Aamer Ahmed Khan in Karachi says that in effect, a new office will be set up along the lines of the office of the ombudsman, at provincial as well as district level.
It will be headed by a cleric called "mohtasib" - one who holds others accountable - to be nominated by the government.
The principal duty of the cleric will be to "ensure adherence to Islamic values in public places".

According to a draft of the bill, the mohtasib will be required to ensure people pay adequate respect to azan (call to prayers), pray on time and do not engage in commerce at the time of Friday prayers.The mohtasib will also stop unrelated men and women from appearing in public places together and discourage singing and dancing.

The Muttahida Majlis-e-Amal (MMA), Pakistan's six-party religious alliance which is in power in North-West Frontier Province, says it was mandated by the people in the 2002 elections to bring in such laws.

There should only ever be one police force, which is impartial.
If something is not against the law, it does not need/want policing.
If its so severe, make it against the law in the first place!
When having two forces there is always a potential for clash.
Also when one of them does most of the work, the other will become more strict to gain work.
Again its a very bad idea.

The last time I went to Pakistan, I saw girls walking around with fags in the mouths and there were also clubs being opened in undercover places such as old abandoned warehouses.
I think its a good idea. Pakistan is losing its morals and are adapting more and more to the life of the West,
So does the Koran say that only men should be allowed to smoke in public, and that socialising in clubs is forbidden?

The Quran tells us not to do anything that could harm our bodies, hence many scholars have issued fatwas saying smoking is forbidden, or "prohibitively disliked". this affects men and women equally - but i think in pakistani culture it is unladylike for women to be going around with fags in the street (whereas islamically it is considered equally bad for both men and women).
by "clubs" i think chm1 meant disco type things, which are forbidden in Islam - socialising is fine, but not that which involves alcohol and/or dancing with the opposite sex.

Karcahi is getting VERY immoral
The Pakistani morality police does not operate in Karachi. It is only in the North-West Frontier Province. This area is religious and tribal enough already.

Have you ever considered how wrong it is to have to fully fledged police forces that tackle the same issues, but are mutually opposed.
The morality police cannot get people to stop something which is not against the law.
If its against the law, it a job for the real police.
Consider a murder; two separate investigations, one because its against the law, another because its against Islam.
Its all futile.
Overly agressive control never achieves its aims.

i get the feeling women will be targetted more than men who are committing the same offences. I suppose these morality cops will be men?

How will cops know if a man and woman out together in public are strangers or related? What will they demand to see their wedding certificates. How will it work?
Forget the issue of being unlady like to smoke. I think smoking is a disgusting habit regardless of gender. But if these morality cops view smoking as a sin or a crime then the punishment should be dished out equally to the man and woman. The question of it being unladylike doesn;t come into it. To some that could be viewed as a sexist argument employed just to permit men to smoke over women. I suppose it's manly and butch to smoke :roll:

Judda you ain't got kids have you, i suppose you'd be ok with your little kid seeing a grown man or woman walking about naked. It's good for their mental stability. A nice childhood memory isn't it. I don't know about you but nudity should remain in the private arena or for those ppl who are real desperate nude beaches. Most ppl don't wana be subjected to naked men or women walking about in public, we have some dignity.
