This course will look at how in the early seventh century a religious movement emerged on the margins of the great Middle Eastern empires, those of the Byzantines and Sassanians, and came to dominate North Africa and West Asia.

BENEFITS:
1. Appreciate the rich heritage of Islam and thus instil a confidence in the Muslims to aim high and bring back the Glory.
2. Appreciate and feel motivated to excel in a multicultural environment, as despite an increasing number of peoples becoming Muslim at that time, the Jewish, Christian and other communities remained, and learn how the Arabic language slowly spread.
3. Learn and feel inspired by how within different physical environments, Muslim societies developed distinctive institutions and forms; and about how the connections established between regions in the Mediterranean basin and in that of the Indian Ocean created a single economic system and brought about changes in agriculture and crafts.
4. Use lessons from the past to improve our current situation and develop a deeper understanding of the context we live in.
