LIGHTSTUDY

One of the major influences in the revival of classical Islamic teaching in the West has been the inspiring efforts of Shaykh Hamza Yusuf. Many have benefited from his discourses and clarity regarding the educational system. In addition, the Zaytuna Institute he founded in California has inspired us to make similar efforts here in the UK.

The LightStudy Programme is one of the many attempts to work at a local level and bring classical Islamic teaching to Muslims in the West. It is based on the belief that nothing changes at a national or global level until there is change at the grass roots.

The concept behind the name LightStudy is that the format of studying for just one day is in reality very 'light' in comparison to a traditional seeker of knowledge who would spend many years studying the religious sciences. The intention is to acquire the 'light' of a blessed text so that it may enter our hearts and nourish our soul.

The LightStudy programme has began to play an effective role in bringing some blessed teachers from overseas as well as facilitating local scholars here in the UK. With the increasing success of this model, many are now considering establishing other LightStudy programmes around the country.

We have recently been fortunate enough to have programmes with many great scholars including Shaykh Muhammad al Yaqoubi, Imam Zaid Shakir and Shaykh Muhammad Abubakr BaShoaib. The LightStudy Programmes in the North of England have had regular courses in the company of scholars such as Abdul Hakim Murad, Muhammad Sharif, Imam Rami Muhammad and recently Shaykh Habib Ali Jufri and Muhsin Najjar.
