The Muslim Dress code

Something I was asked about on Tribune, but I couldn't really give good answers to...

The question:

  1. How do you decide what is the dress of men etc? eg skirts etc - in Scotland they wear kilts and to someone unaware the Arab clothes may look like a dress.
  2. What are the restrictions?
  3. Why?

There were probably more questions, but since it is not a topic that I have thought too much about i could not really answer the questions asked etc, so I am posting here instead.

That's JUST like this place isn't it, i swear they do that with EVERYthing.

When they can't answer something or just prefer not to think about it because it means challenging what they think, they just selectively blank it out.

It's stupid and it makes me want to swear, and in this message in my head there were a lot of f words but luckily my fingers can control themselves.

I think the general answer to this is tha there are no hard and fast rules, other than principles - personal judgement here would matter.

It is like that story about the cow in surah Baqarah - that when people started looking for details, they got themselves into trouble.

A few related things - when conquering Makkah, the prophet ﷺ had his hair in 4 braids.

There are a few ahadith I think where the prophet ﷺ mentioned that he recieved revelation when covered in the cloak of ummul Mu'mineen Hadhrat Aisha (ra) (but this could mean something else as by cloak it could mean blanket or something, or it could just mean a general covering of some sort).

So it is a judgement thing where people should be able to decide what is right and wrong without being legislated. People can decide if something is worn exclusively by men ot women or by both etc.

(I dont think its an issue of not wanting to think, but having a community that is not always too affeced by such things and a lack of other knowledgeable people who can set things straight.)

what about wearing your dad's old clothes? at home? where no non-mahram can see you?

Here are some ahadiths i found.

Narrated Ibn 'Abbas: Allah's Apostle cursed those men who are in the similitude (assume the manners) of women and those women who are in the similitude of men.
Sahih Bukhari, Volume 7, Book 72, Number 773

Narated By Ibn 'Abbas : The Prophet cursed effeminate men (those men who are in the similitude (assume the manners of women) and those women who assume the manners of men, and he said, "Turn them out of your houses." The Prophet turned out such-and-such man, and 'Umar turned out such-and-such woman. Bukhari Volumn 007, Book 072, Hadith Number 774.

so from this im guessing the answers are no and no to the questions i asked. Im also thinking that being a "tom-boy" is wrong.

I thought braids were a typical women hairstyle??
