Bush administration annexes internet

An extraordinary statement by the US government has sent shockwaves around the internet world and thrown the future of the network into doubt.

In a worrying U-turn, the US Department of Commerce (DoC) has made it clear it intends to retain control of the internet's root servers indefinitely. It was due to relinquish that control in September 2006, when its contract with overseeing body ICANN ended...

hahahha I love the title to this thread

I didn't even know that there were "root servers" for the internet.. I figured it was downloaded on everybody's computer and we all just interacted.

So what's the big deal anyway - can we like... crash the entire internet forever if we wanted to or somethin?

And how big are these computers?!

I mean the internet is big...

Forum: How big dave?
Dave: Really big!
Forum: How big is really big Dave?
Dave: Bigger than this chicken!

ABSOLUTELY FREAKING GIGANTIC

Its not really a big thing IMO (yet).

They have always had control.

It was just assumed in the fture, they would relinquish it.

Now that assumption has been erm... disassumed.

If they misuse their powers they can (theoretically) wipe off the internet websites that they do not like. I do not fully undertand this though.

nothing will come of it, no1 will even notice any diffrence.

they probably fund the Al-Qaeda sites and then turn against em and declare a war on e-terror

He dances with ecstasy and delight.

Caught by our own thoughts,
We worry about every little thing,
But once we get drunk on that love,
Whatever will be, will be.

I don't really think that's a bad thing - in fact they should be doing it now. Take off terrorist websites and porn websites.

The internet is a dirty place - needs to be cleaned up IMO

It can turn into a bad thing if the censorship turns political...
