More Asian women having abortions

There has been a big jump in the number of Asian women having abortions in the UK, according to figures from the Department of Health.

They show there were 15,197 terminations in 2007, compared with 10,084 in 2003 for all age groups.

Experts say more Asian women are now in open relationships and are having sex whereas culturally in the past it was something they did after marriage.

Health professionals want contraceptive services to be better promoted.

One Asian teenager, who wanted to remain anonymous, told the BBC about her experience of having an abortion two years ago.

"I was in a relationship with someone and it wasn't open, and we were having an intimate relationship and... unfortunately I found out I was pregnant... I didn't know what to do, didn't know who to turn to."

Dont be silly.

Muslim sisters dont kill their babies.

Its something you would expect wouldnt you?
Because its happening undercover, but remember Asian doesnt equal Muslim. But the article is inferring on Asian teenagers who live in cultures where sex comes after marriage.
I expect it more because abortion hides the secret but I dont like how abortion is being seen as a contraceptive solution and how people are seeing it an easy access to murder a potential human being. Unless the mother is ill of course.

Is it just me or does Omrow love the "brush it under the carpet" approach?

There is nothing to brush.
Its a rubbish report. No independent corroboration whatsoever.

It's a fairly naive approach, mate.

True.

The guys have been playing the field for years. The girls are at the same game too - maybe/probably a few years behind due to issues such as "respect" and having less of an opportunity.

The current sort of hypocrisy/inequality cannot remain forever. It has to go one way or the other.

Assallamu Allaikum,

I work in and around Birmingham with young people of all "major" religions, cultures and ethnic origin male and female. I can honestly say that the amount of pregnancies that are occuring particularly in the Asian Muslim teenage age group has risen hugely over the last 5 to 10 years. As part of my case load this year alone I have dealt with 2 young Muslim women that wanted a referral for termination of a pregnancy and seven others that have "run away" from home to be with "boyfriends" or to "get away" from family.

I work in a team of twelve so I am not the only one that has to deal with these issues. The age range is 16 - 25 a quite narrow range.

It is, very sadly, a growing thing among Asian girls.

Wassallam.

Do you think there are any specific reasons for any of this?

Sounds like a symptom of something bigger...

Assallamu Allaikum,

Unfortunately the "religious" aspects of these young ladies situation is difficult to discuss given the professional etiquette that I have to observe.
The majority of the young ladies that I speak to have little regard for self worth and are too concerned about peer pressure, the need to "conform" to what there friends are doing. I think they have been raised in a society where doing there own "thing" is acceptable and actually a right and this is starting to influence them more and more. On the occassions that I have been able to point the discussion in the direction of Islamic values the almost standard answer is thats between me and Allah (swt).

I am sorry to say that I personally feel that Islam is not in the hearts of a lot of young people and is almost a secondary thought. And often young people have the impression that as long as I ask Allah (swt) for forgiveness it will be fine.

Wassallam.
