According to the theory, Nemesis periodically (roughly every 26 million years), passes through a denser region of the Oort cloud, disrupting the orbits of comets, and sending millions of comets into the inner solar system and potential collision with the Earth. The last major extinction period was about 5 million years ago, so Muller posits that Nemesis is likely 1-1.5 light years away at present, and even has ideas of what area of the sky it might be in (supported by Yarris, 1987), near Hydra, based on a theoretical orbit derived from original apogees of a number of atypical long period comets that describe an orbital arc that meets the specifications of Muller's theory.
Evidence for the Nemesis Theory can also be found with the discovery of high concentrations of iridium which is only found in extraterrestrial objects such as comets. (Morris 2001) These traces of iridium can be found in samples of limestone at more than 25 sites around the world. They provide a geological history of the end of the Cretaceous and the beginning of the Tertiary Period, which marks the extinction of the dinosaurs. (Yarris 1987) Between the limestone of these two periods which is known as the K/T boundary, is found a layer of red clay. When tested, this layer of clay was found to be 600 times richer in iridium than that of the surrounding limestone layers. It has been shown that the iridium found at the 25 different sites come from the same source. By measuring the concentration of elements that are usually found with iridium such as gold and platinum, it can be determined through a comparison of the ratio of the elements that the iridium is a result from one unifying source such as a comet. (Goldsmith 1985)

Baring in mind its only a theory but a probable one. The only problem with it is that they have so far been unable to identify which is the Nemesis star.

OKAY.....
I'll give you the childrens version then... it all goes a little something like this: many many many years ago before the age of man there were these HUGE reptiles called dinosaurs that domaniated the earth. The commonly accepted theory as to what happened to them is a huge meteor struck earth that wiped out all life on earth, this is called "Mass Extinction".
Now the Nemesis Theory suggests that a large number of asteriods and meteors pass through out solar system roughly once every 25 million years. These comets originate from a group of comets called the Ooart Cloud that resides light years outside of our solar system.
So theres our solar system and then just outside is the ooart cloud (filled with asteriods, comets, meteors) now normally their orbit around our solar system is stable and they pretty much dont go further into it. So what causes them to go in... well thats the mystery.
What the Nemesis Theory suggests is that our Sun has a companion star (which they've named Nemesis) whose orbit is on the other side of the Ooart Cloud and whenever it passes near by (every 25 million years or so) its gravity grabs some comets outta the Ooart cloud and tends to chuck them towards our solar system which therefore increases the chances of Earth being hit and causing [b]Mass Extinction of All Life.[/b]

Well the findings suggest that theres still a good couple of million years to go before the next one. And since its happened pretty much every 25 million years its very likely.
The problem with the theory is that they have yet to identify which star is Nemesis (yes theres that many out there) and since we cant visibly see it they believe it may be what astronomers call a brown dwarf (a star thats whose mass was to sustain stable hydrogen fusion like a regular star) although Nemesis is theorized to be somewhere in the Hydra Constellation.

Yes its a theory but only coz they've not identified the Nemesis star... however there are a few new space programs going that may help identify it (if it exists).
I dont know which picture you were looking at but the reference site i provided doesnt have any pictures of the Death Star. The nemesis star was at one point named 'the death star' but was later changed... and yes thats star wars.
There is evidence that does support the nemesis theory... and since i highly doubt anyones actually read the whole article i'll elaborate: as the Nemesis theory suggests Mass Extinction has happened [b]Periodically[/b] throughtout history. By examining the fossil records scientists hav gathered data showing the statistical estimation of extinction as shown in the picture below. The arrows are plotted [b]every 26 million years [/b]and as one can see, they correlate for the most part to the peaks of extinction.

(Morris 2001) An impact of such magnitude, would cause fine dust particles to rise into the stratosphere; [b]blackening the sky and leaving the world in perpetual darkness.[/b] These conditions would create an uninhabitable environment and therefore the extinction of living creatures.
But yes it is still a theory... but i wouldnt say it was far fetched.
